Winning & Losing
The neat part of all band programs is we get to compete against ourselves. For marching arts, this may mean we work to increase our score over the course of a season. For concert and jazz bands, we may work on edging up to gold with distinction or adding more challenging musical elements to measure improvement. We set goals, outline objectives, and measure our success based on our ability to meet our goals.
For marching arts, we also compete against other schools and programs. This introduces some fun competition. It also promotes self-evaluation: by watching others we widen our view. We can learn a lot from other programs! Whether we win or lose, we are always seeking to meet our goals. Sometimes those goals include winning but we always balance an achievement goal with a growth goal. Our community strives for an attitude of constant improvement.
As a spectator, it’s easy to get caught-up in placements, scores, and what other groups are doing. Please remember that all performers at every school at every competition have put in hours of effort, passion, and skill. ZCHS Bands promotes camaraderie. We want everyone in our community to engage with competitive programs with an attitude of respect and appreciation. Every performer deserves applause, and we hope every performer does their best.
