ZCHS Bands history

ZCHS Bands have performed in a modern program capacity for over 50 years. Led initially by esteemed band director, Lynn Jones, the program grew and flourished in the 1970s and 1980s. In the 1990s we had a strong concert and jazz band program, with one concert band and one jazz band. Zionsville began a phase of rapid growth in the mid-1990s. The growth coincided with an evolution in the marching arts away from a militaristic style to a performance art. Performances pushed into new frontiers, adding complexity, skill, technique, and effects.

In 1998 Lynn Jones retired with much love and gratitude from the entire community. He touched the lives of every student. Zionsville Band Boosters collaborated with ZCHS to hire a new band director with a focus on the marching arts. The band began developing strong marching skills. Yet the program did not succeed in feeling collaborative, inspiring, and fun–essential elements of an educational band program.

In 2000, director Tom Landrum was hired and has been the director of ZCHS bands ever since. Under his deft leadership, ZCHS Bands have blossomed into three concert bands, two jazz bands, a pep band, two color guards, a percussion class, a competitive indoor percussion group, and a marching band.  Every program competes at a high-level of achievement.
